SUMMARY:nerikomi workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on exploration of Nerikomi\, the Japanese hand-building technique that layers and slices colored clays to create intricate\, naturally marbled patterns within the clay body. Led by acclaimed ceramic artist Maria Economides\, this workshop offers an intimate look into her distinctive process — where rhythm\, patience\, and material intuition converge to form vessels that celebrate the poetry of imperfection. \nParticipants will begin with a live demonstration by Maria\, followed by guided individual practice. Through her process-based approach\, students will discover how color\, texture\, and composition emerge through the thoughtful interaction of clays and pigments. By the end of the workshop\, each participant will complete two hand-built vessels\, each reflecting a different Nerikomi technique and finished using Maria’s unique trimming and surface refinement methods. \nkey learning objectives\nUnderstand the principles of the Nerikomi technique and its applications in contemporary ceramics\nLearn to work with two contrasting clay bodies — white and brown — to explore natural variation and pattern formation\nExperiment with coloring clay using pigments and stains to achieve distinct marbling effects\nHand-build and refine two vessels (up to 30 cm) using two different Nerikomi approaches\nApply Maria’s trimming and finishing techniques to enhance the final form and texture of each piece \nWhat to Expect\nHands-on instruction and live demonstrations by Maria Economides\nGuidance through the entire process — from coloring clay to constructing and finishing vessels\nAll tools and materials provided by the studio\nBisque firing of both vessels included in the workshop price

SUMMARY:handbuilding & glazing techniques
DESCRIPTION:Learn handbuilding methods — including pinching\, coiling\, and slab construction — to create functional and sculptural ceramic pieces. This class invites participants to explore the full creative potential of clay through intuitive form-making\, thoughtful craftsmanship\, and a focus on personal expression. Once your pieces are built\, you’ll discover a range of glazing techniques that bring depth\, color\, and texture to your work. From layering glazes and experimenting with surface treatments to achieving unique visual effects\, you’ll learn how finishing transforms form into expression. \nkey learning objectives:\nLearn foundational handbuilding techniques — pinching\, coiling\, and slab work — to create vessels and sculptural forms.\nUnderstand how to combine forms and textures to achieve balance\, proportion\, and structural integrity.\nExplore surface decoration methods\, including carving\, slip application\, and underglaze painting.\nDevelop a strong understanding of glazing principles\, color layering\, and surface experimentation.\nCultivate a personal creative approach that bridges technique with artistic expression. \nwhat to expect:A hands-on\, exploratory course designed to expand your confidence and creativity with clay. Each session begins with guided demonstrations\, followed by ample studio time for individual practice. Participants will create a small collection of handbuilt works — from functional pieces to expressive sculptural forms — and complete them with their own glaze and surface designs. \nThroughout the course\, you’ll receive personalized feedback and technical guidance to refine your skills and bring your artistic vision to life.Studio glazes and tools are provided. No prior experience is required — just curiosity\, creativity\, and a willingness to get your hands dirty.
