SUMMARY:terra sigillata & saggar firing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive exploration of ancient ceramic surface techniques and atmospheric firing methods through our Terra Sigillata & Saggar Firing Workshop. This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the rich history and contemporary application of terra sigillata — a refined clay slip used to create smooth\, satin-like surfaces — alongside the unpredictable and expressive process of saggar firing. \nThroughout the workshop\, participants will learn how to prepare and apply terra sigillata to ceramic surfaces\, experiment with burnishing techniques\, and understand how surface preparation influences the final firing results. The second part of the experience focuses on saggar firing\, where organic materials\, oxides\, salts\, and combustibles interact with the clay body during firing to produce unique markings\, smoke patterns\, and natural surface variations. \nCombining technical knowledge with experimentation\, this workshop encourages participants to embrace process \, unpredictability \, and material transformation while developing a deeper understanding of alternative firing practices. \nBy the end of the program\, participants will have created a series of uniquely finished ceramic pieces and gained practical knowledge of both terra sigillata application and saggar firing techniques. \nkey learning objectives \nUnderstand the history and principles of terra sigillata and saggar firing\nLearn how to prepare \, apply \, and polish terra sigillata surfaces\nExplore burnishing techniques and surface refinement\nDiscover the fundamentals of saggar firing and atmospheric effects\nExperiment with organic materials \, oxides \, and combustibles to create unique surface results\nDevelop an appreciation for process-driven and alternative ceramic practices \nwhat to expect \nLive demonstrations of terra sigillata preparation and application\nGuided surface treatment and burnishing sessions\nIntroduction to saggar firing methods and materials\nHands-on experimentation with atmospheric firing techniques\nExploration of smoke effects\, markings\, and natural surface variations\nA supportive and exploratory studio environment\nA rich\, experimental\, and transformative ceramic experience
